Maui & Sons is set to open Friday or Saturday of this week in Venice, Calif. Started from the brainchild three young Southern California local surfers, Maui & Sons was developed into a surfing and sportswear shop. Rick Rietveld, creative director and founding partner, launched the brand over 30 years ago with bold ideas, a strong SoCal vibe, and ultimately introducing madras surf shorts.

“There was a great location [for the new store] available right near the pier, near all the restaurants,” said Patricia Thorton, vice president of sales for Maui & Sons. The pier at Venice is known for its surf-inspired shopping as well as dining restaurants. The brand chose the location due to the convenience in relation to its other store. “We already have a Skate Shop on the boardwalk which is also a Maui & Sons store,” said Thorton. The Venice-strip skate shop features a lot of core skate brands owned and operated by Cheryl Johnson, general manager of the new store.

Maui & Sons grows in local L.A. area

Maui & Sons has been around since 1980 with a huge L.A. following. Thorton believes that the store opening will inevitably increase their L.A. market. Besides the skate shop store, this will be the only other Maui & Sons bricks-and-mortar shop. “As our Brand proves successful with our retail partners we grow each year,” said Thorton. Starting originally with only surf and sportswear, the label has now added new categories including hats, accessories, etc.

Their popularity and success can be attributed to their commitment to the SoCal Lifestyle. “At Maui and Sons, our goal is to embody the spirit of our customers with a dedication to board sports and the active lifestyle,” said Thorton. The brand is represented by their Cookie Logo, featuring design elements that represent nature: air, water, fire, and earth. The company produces and sells an assortment of apparel, sporting goods, footwear, and accessories. With their new flagship store, the company expects to grow in popularity in L.A.
