Organizing a Fashion Week involves many different fashion professionals who are experts in their fields ranging from director to designer. With the series “Meet Fashion Week professionals”, FashionUnited looks behind the catwalk to introduce those who bring great fashion events to life all around the globe. FashionUnited recently chatted with Lindsey to learn more about her role at the LA Fashion Week.
Lindsey can you tell us a little bit about the LA Fashion Week?
LA Fashion Week® is an organization started by Arthur Chipman in 2012. LAFW, which has over 15k attendees each season, is dedicated to raising the profile of fashion in the US. LA, the largest apparel manufacturer in the world, and the epicenter of entertainment, is experiencing a fashion surge like never before. You’ve got Tom Ford, Stella McCartney, and Burberry, to name just a few, that are choosing to debut collections in LA rather than London or Paris. Los Angeles has the potential to be at the same level as the “Big Four”, and that’s what we’re working towards, elevating LA.
What’s your role at the LA Fashion Week?
We all wear a lot of hats at LAFW, but my main focuses this season include Marketing, Client Relations, and Event Production. It’s a perfect position for me, as I am very creative, but also extremely business oriented. I am the only person on the marketing team for LAFW SS17, so it’s been a bit of a challenge, but it gave me the opportunity to really push myself, and it will all be worth it when it all comes together at LAFW SS17.
What do you like most about your job?
Everyday presents new creative connections, and new opportunities. Everybody kind of collaborates and really vibes off of each other in the office. We’ve got an incredible team and we’re all super close so its like working with your best friends, #LAFWfamily.
What is your professional background?
I was born and raised in Boise, Idaho. I started modeling when I was fifteen and went everywhere from New York to Tokyo. This was my first taste of the fashion industry, and I fell head over heels. I moved to LA three years ago, and recently graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising. I’ve been with LAFW since the beginning, and in those two short years I’ve learned more than I’d ever imagined.
Did you always want to work for a fashion event like the LA Fashion Week?
It’s certainly always been a dream of mine to work in the industry, and as fate would have it, the very first internship I applied for happened to be LAFW, and I’ve been here ever since. I’ve also worked as a stylist assistant for celebrity stylist, Taylor Jacobson, but LAFW is definitely where I’m supposed to be, and I couldn’t be happier.
What is your advice for those who want to pursue a career in fashion?
I have too much advice to put here. One thing I can say is to never stop dreaming, especially in a place like Los Angeles. There are so many incredible opportunities here, you just have to work harder and smarter than everyone that’s striving for the same dream. Also, I’d say to treat everyone with respect, not only because they deserve it, but because you have no idea who these people are or what they can do for you.
