In the scheme of fashion capitals, Los Angeles isn’t always the first city to come to mind. Unlike Paris, London, Milan, and New York whom have all established themselves as fundamental fashion-minded cities, Los Angeles has emerged in recent years improving more and more in its fashion businesses. Recently, as reported by real estate website Trulia, the SoCal city was cited as the most fashionable city for fashion businesses and real estate opportunities for the industry in the U.S. than any other city.

The “Fashion Index” report was issued revealing that Los Angeles even beat out New York, which is so often the U.S.’s most known fashionable city. Following closely behind were other areas in California such as Riverside, Anaheim, and other southern cities. With a marketable audience including Hollywood celebrities and fashion influencers, it’s understandable that L.A. would lead from a fashion standpoint.

The study used Yelp classifications of fashion businesses to determine its results. According to InStyle, the study was based on ranking cities due to the number of businesses focusing on fashion, as well as the percentage of “fashion-conscious households.” Using both real estate listing data as well as local places found through Yelp, the study was able to determine how many businesses were in each metro area of the U.S. as well. The study analyzed over 100 cities in the country to examine each by style, retail, and business. Los Angeles was able to top the list, although other cities such as Chicago, Orlando, Seattle were in the top ten.

Los Angeles beats out New York City for U.S.’s most fashionable city

Although New York is typically known for its high fashion and street style elements, it’s not entirely surprising that L.A. would beat the Big Apple out. As far as manufacturing in America, L.A. is a definite leading contender, especially when it comes to the denim industry. Through the large population of celebrities living in the city, it also adds to the style and fashion of the area. Trulia also released “the most coveted closets” including celebrities who live in L.A. such as Kim Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, Chrissy Teigen, and more.

Additionally, more fashion designers have started to move fashion shows to the West Coast as well. Tom Ford started to host fashion shows in Los Angeles in recent years, with other local and non-local designers following suit. Using L.A. for its parties, venues, and culture of the city is a way that fashion designers have taken advantage of the fashion capital. The city also hosts multiple fashion events throughout the year including a myriad of fashion weeks and trade events. According to this research, it seems that Los Angeles has caught up to New York faster than we thought. With only more manufacturing, emerging labels, and fashion businesses to come, it’ll be interesting to see what the future of the City of Angels will be.
